The night after Christmas

T'was the night after Christmas,
And all through our home,
Not a creature was stirring,
We felt so alone.
From a house full of family,
To two cats sleeping tight,
And Hubs watching football;
It's so quiet tonight.
Our Christmas was ruined,
By that Omicron creep;
It infected the grands,
Who just wanted to sleep.
Despite all being vaxed,
Except the baby who's two,
They still got the virus;
It's called a break-through.
Son#1 is still healthy,
But our DIL's sick;
Nobody wanted to visit them,
Not even St. Nick.
So her family stayed here,
And Son#2 as well;
Casa AGMA was packed,
With folks worried as hell.
Having guests was okay,
And we ate lots of yummies;
But six folks in a small townhouse,
Thank God we had gummies!
Positive Christmas Day tests,
Made all of us sad;
All of our guests fled Chicago,
That damn Omicron is bad.
So we wait until Tuesday,
To see if we have "it";
Pray the vax and booster,
Will scare off that sh*t.
So be careful out there,
Omicron is definitely here;
Stay masked, wash your hands,
Don't let others come near.
Three full Christmas stockings,
Are still hung up with care,
And lots of gifts under the tree
‘Til healthy kids can be there.
Let’s pray 2022,
Is free from COVID fear;
AGMA sends you my love,
Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  1. I hear ya, sistah. My son in CA tested positive at the beginning of last week. So far, he’s the only one to test positive in his family of four (all of whom have been vaccinated and/or been boosted.) Today, my granddaughter here tested positive. I had Christmas dinner with her and her folks yesterday. All of us have been vaccinated and I have been boosted. Time will tell…

    • A friend of mine had her family of 11 over yesterday for Christmas festivities & dinner. Today, 2 of them tested positive. Ugh. But the way I look at it, the vaccine & booster might not keep people from getting the virus, but it will protect against serious illness due to the virus. Wishing you health & NO virus my friend!

  2. I’m saving that poem — it’s good enough to be in every grade school reader (do “readers” still exist?) You are always able to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, and give us a chuckle in the darkest of times. Keep it up — this world needs more AGMA.

  3. Geez AGMA, such a bummer. Wish it would all just go away. Hope you and the hubs stay as well as possible and that everyone you love gets through it all okay. It’s making a run in my east coast family again. Out here on the left coast we are vaxxed, boosted, masked, socially distant and staying in for the holidays alone, and still, we feel it’s just a matter of time before it finds us too. Wishing you well in the New Year and hoping 2022 is the year we get a handle on this beast. XOX

    • Hey Ilona! It’s been a minute… Are you still COVID free? Here in Chicago, we are all masked and socially distancing and vaxed and boosted, but it still got Son#1 and family. This stuff is getting sooooo old! And while those of us who have done all we can to stay healthy get mild symptoms when we do catch it, it’s mind boggling to realize that people are still dying from COVID because they refused to get the vaccine. What a horrible waste of life – I just don’t get it. My MIL is 88 and won’t get vaccinated. She lives like a recluse in her house. It’s so sad…

      • Agma we are fine. Staying vaxxed and masked up, but just as frustrated as everyone who is trying to do the right thing. Planning a trip to Sicily and S. Italy end of March. Fingers crossed that it’s a go. Everyone on the tour is a member of our local travel group and vaccinated, and we have our own bus and are visiting a lot of smaller venues, although Pompei is on the itinerary, so it feels like it will be safe as things can be these days. Hope you MIL stays well. This virus is so hard on the elderly.

  4. My sister was in same boat as you with her daughter and family. (We have no kids and no family close, so it was always gonna be just us for the holiday.) I’m beginning to think it’s only a matter of time. Luckily with vaccine and booster, the worry about severe illness, hospitalization, and death is minimized. I’m more worried about needing to go to hospital for another reason and not getting care…because non-vaccinated folks are 25X more likely to be needing hospitalization. And yes, Florida cases are surging.

    • Hey Pat! I’m with you – being vaxed and boosted, I don’t worry about getting horribly ill from COVID. I have canceled 2 international trips in the last 2 months because my main worry was testing positive before leaving to come home. Then I would have to quarantine in some dumpy quarantine hotel that is overpriced with bad food. That didn’t sound too appealing, so I canceled a trip to Rome and Puerto Vallarta. The other thing that really concerns me is the burn out of medical personnel. Even if there is room in the hospitals, those folks are fried! There was a segment of the PBS news tonight that dealt with pharmacist burn out because of working long hours because of being short staffed and then being underpaid on top of it. Honestly, something needs to change radically in our health care system. How is Florida now?

      • Florida numbers are still high, but everyone acts like it’s over. Masks are not mandatory, but nobody seems to look askance if you wear one. I will wear one if I am indoors for any period of time. Luckily, so much here is outdoors, even in winter!
